Melanie Fernandez, Counselling Intern

Melanie is an Intern Counsellor at Lonsdale Psychology who is currently completing her Master's degree in Counselling Psychology.  Melanie provides counselling to both youth and adults. Her prior work experiences as a Youth Counsellor, Behaviour Interventionist and an Intake Worker have all provided her with the skills required to connect well with her clients.  In her role as a Youth Care Counsellor, she provided individual support to youth dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem and trauma.  As a Behavioural Interventionist, she provided support to youth struggling to cope socially, emotionally, and behaviourally and as an Intake Worker at a Counselling Centre, she screened clients’ needs to determine the most appropriate therapeutic fit.

Melanie is committed to providing clients with a safe, non-judgmental environment where their concerns can be addressed with respect, compassion, and care.  She has a deep appreciation for working within a multi-cultural lens. This framework provides her with the opportunity to appreciate that all people view the world through different lenses and, therefore, have unique experiences within their internal and external worlds.

Melanie offers a warm and empathic approach, with the commitment to strengthen the health and well-being of individuals. Her over-riding theoretical orientation is Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but in practice, she pulls from a wide variety of techniques that are tailored towards the individual.  In her leisure time, Melanie enjoys spending quality time with family and friends and, as a former professional dancer, she enjoys being physically active.
